Abstracts:
- »Kang and Wang explore the multi-layered structures of silencing that Indigenous survivors of the comfort women system in Taiwan face. They explain how both the colonial Japanese and subsequent Kuomintang governments’ assimilationist policies toward the Indigenous Truku people tore the social and economic fabric of the community in ways that made them particularly vulnerable to trafficking and left them with nowhere to tell their stories of sexual exploitation and victimization, especially in the context of both Truku and Han-Chinese norms related to gender and sexuality. Even after some joined the comfort women redress movement, the social support system remained uncertain both within the Truku community and larger Taiwan.« (Source: Mary M. - »While existing literature has pointed out the effects of early sexual trauma on Indigenous comfort women survivors in Taiwan, the impact of the interplay of survivors’ sexual trauma with their multiple social locations on their life trajectories is rarely discussed. In this article, two Truku Indigenous survivors’ life stories are reconstructed to explore the effects of early-life sexual trauma and the social locations that shaped their life trajectories via intersectionality and life course lenses. We argue that Truku survivors’ life trajectories intersect with four-layered structural oppression from the state, society, and communities different from that of Han Chinese survivors. The findings of this study reveal unique features of Indigenous survivors that should not be overlooked.« (Source: Women's History Review)
